Can you belive it? I live in Swedens largest town but no one here sells traveler's notebooks or inserts??<br />
Well its true so I decided to try some DIY and see how difficult it could be to make some inserts myself. Turns out it was easy, inexpensive and fun!<br />
I know there is tons of tutorials on internet but I wanted to share anyway (a bit proud that I could make them...).<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxgVZW-R9PVxKq6rJuwz4U21UALOYMdbOWfqqv_WPYMJboYf9YC2fuFrtrahll0pJ1WLjHqFxHgM1Bzl_4-16y6asG9DNMiAb4WaI8WiAJh2qAsHxIL8ECDaYswf_xd-rFDgcIBDyHPWw/s1600/20180505_111326.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxgVZW-R9PVxKq6rJuwz4U21UALOYMdbOWfqqv_WPYMJboYf9YC2fuFrtrahll0pJ1WLjHqFxHgM1Bzl_4-16y6asG9DNMiAb4WaI8WiAJh2qAsHxIL8ECDaYswf_xd-rFDgcIBDyHPWw/s320/20180505_111326.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Paper, ruler, knife and stapler</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I took 16 sheets of A4 paper and one sheet of cardstock. stapled them together in the middle with a smart yet inexpensive booklet stapler I found.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPBYglSNREYgzU3HiFEYidZwinBCim2OFipMEA0zTNaM_LixL8OZTvAPhyphenhyphenMgzsN_Yjw6_UCxZriUkNBFy7DH1u5nXhyntkXtpZhJ74TvyuwY_ajxoKw0mXUznALGlt7GrSfD4Z0gB3Sio/s1600/20180505_112241.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPBYglSNREYgzU3HiFEYidZwinBCim2OFipMEA0zTNaM_LixL8OZTvAPhyphenhyphenMgzsN_Yjw6_UCxZriUkNBFy7DH1u5nXhyntkXtpZhJ74TvyuwY_ajxoKw0mXUznALGlt7GrSfD4Z0gB3Sio/s320/20180505_112241.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Booklet stapler</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I measure the hight of the insert and draw a line where I want to cut.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTuMP2pnfi6kEmzZEUXgN4GVh5f76x0XF362UvS81sDWcrPLELtsdcdgfkMp2_W_Ztd1uznKX5sAG6-IeDGBHXchnakmR9_gGxyDfRQVlI9i07KaB0RpfMshTKLuDvwZiQdnLWDdOVer0/s1600/20180505_112252.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTuMP2pnfi6kEmzZEUXgN4GVh5f76x0XF362UvS81sDWcrPLELtsdcdgfkMp2_W_Ztd1uznKX5sAG6-IeDGBHXchnakmR9_gGxyDfRQVlI9i07KaB0RpfMshTKLuDvwZiQdnLWDdOVer0/s320/20180505_112252.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ruler</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I use a clamp to make sure the ruler dont move and then i cut with a sharp carpet knife. Dont cut straight thru, cut many times until you are thru all the sheets.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIzntUObFs5tSYd2ZKH6JijihaM3la8TOmjR4Vcfu_PkOadWyudArzxbAOEeiUluRRG-k7IV2AO3UVtgdmBt9Y5mPf43HBtbI8-GXzHAaMFad0BY3DGwAUdxEucXJFoEULAr1I9ymnqq8/s1600/20180505_112714.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIzntUObFs5tSYd2ZKH6JijihaM3la8TOmjR4Vcfu_PkOadWyudArzxbAOEeiUluRRG-k7IV2AO3UVtgdmBt9Y5mPf43HBtbI8-GXzHAaMFad0BY3DGwAUdxEucXJFoEULAr1I9ymnqq8/s320/20180505_112714.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
When you finnished cutting you have space to put in one more staple.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEkI3meZlEhRuZDhhvhZksetcmttXZg3mK3GeAVIwNWLZACYxs6sbnPqwYNGWMhZQ22LcKoY18Prng-gyu-RfK-aaeJZrMoIEqXUsPm-wOuoDF9djsIwKMVbaOfLiycVHmEiTRa_SU-aw/s1600/20180505_112928.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEkI3meZlEhRuZDhhvhZksetcmttXZg3mK3GeAVIwNWLZACYxs6sbnPqwYNGWMhZQ22LcKoY18Prng-gyu-RfK-aaeJZrMoIEqXUsPm-wOuoDF9djsIwKMVbaOfLiycVHmEiTRa_SU-aw/s320/20180505_112928.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Clamp and plexiglass</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Now you fold the insert. I use a thick piece of plexiglass and the clamp to make the fold.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Original insert</td></tr>

<br />
Measure the width of the insert and cut it the same way you did before.<br />

<br />
Repeat the procedure with the other half of the paper sheets.<br />
I use the traveler's notebook passport size so with 16 A4 sheets you get two inserts for your travelers notebook.<br />
Have fun!<br />

<br />
Lately I have been feeling a bit unintellectual. I have read John le Carre's first four novels in row! The first two, "Call for the Dead" and "A Murder of Quality " are more of traditional detective stories especially the second one. The other two, "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" and "The Looking-Glass War" are classic spy novels of the cold war era with a lot of bluff and double bluff. Parts of the books are set in East Germany a country that no longer exist.<br />

<br />
I'm old enough to have visited two countries that don't exist anymore, Jugoslavia and East Germany. It was in the early 80's and I went to Berlin by train. If remember correctly we took the train to Copenhagen (from Sweden) changed train to Hamburg and in Hamburg we took a night train to West Berlin.<br />
Europe was a completely different world back then. When we had crossed the border in the middle of the night the train was stopped and borded by soldiers with automatic guns and angry dogs that looked like they where trained to kill. They woke everybody up and demanded to see our passports. I gave them my passport but they where not satisfied, on the picture in my passport I had my glasses on so half a sleep in the middle of the night I had to find my glasses and put them on, then they finally accepted me!<br />
After that we had a great week and I went to every art museum I could find.<br />

Being a father of a little boy and a husband and also full time worker means that available time is scarce. But in my traveler's notebook I allways carry with me a small sketchbook so that I can make a small drawing now and then.<br />

Most of the time I just stop thinking and let the creativity loose and the result is usually something abstract but not allways and it's not important. What matters is that it makes me feel good.<br />
I guess what I do is not strictly art journaling, an art journal is supposed to be like a illustrated diary but all I do is make a drawing now and then.<br />

It was really fun to make the folder, I modelled it after a moleskine notebook but with loose leafs and I also made a smaller one to carry a stack of 3x5 index cards for my to do lists. Now I seem to use my traveler's notebook for everything instead.<br />
Since the DIY trend is strong in the traveler's notebook community perhaps I will make one myself someday or some inserts perhaps?A guy using travelers notebook http://www.blogger.com/profile/17230414074647641798noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1206264812800080956.post-875057926736585782018-04-02T18:01:00.000-07:002018-04-02T18:01:15.044-07:00Notebooks, travelsI love traveling by train and there are many reasons why I love that. It is a bit old fashioned, you travel a distance but it also feels like you travel in time. To an era when trains was the only way to travel long distances.<br />

I still think traveling by train is the proper way to travel. Spending some time in an old beautiful crowded train station can be interesting, you see people from all over the world and you can listen to languages you dont understand.<br />

I allways bring a notebook and a good pen when I travel by train. You get a lot of time to read and contemplate life. Thats why I love carrying my traveler's notebook, I can carry whatever I want in my traveler's notebook and I can make some drawings or write down things thats on my mind.<br />

The first thing I regretted when my Traveler's notebook arrived was that I didn't order a pen holder. But then again using a travelers notebook involves a bit of DIY so I made my own pen loop, while I made it I took some pictures so now I like to share how to make a real easy double pen loop for the traveler's notebook. I use the passport size but it can just as easy be made to fit the standard size.<br />

Recently he sugested using old fashioned paper planner and that actually appealed to me a lot!<br />
I have allways been fond of writing with good pens and fountain pens and I have a stack of notebooks I use for different purposes.<br />
Anyway, my friends sugestion got me thinking and I said to myself: Hey, why don't you dig up your old filofax and use that? Said and done, after som digging I found it, an old pocket size black leather filofax.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pocket size filofax</td></tr>

<br />
The trouble with my filofax was that it has the old 4-ring mechanism and that means I can't buy any new refills...<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">4-ring mechanism (you can see it was last in use year 2000...)</td></tr>

If you are interested why here is an interesting <a href="https://philofaxy.blogspot.se/2013/04/filofax-4-ring-pocket-organisers.html?m=1">article</a>.<br />
That meant I had to continue my search and I found the interesting article in NYT <a href="https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/01/04/smarter-living/paper-planner-guide.html?referer=https://www.google.se/">written by Kristin Wong</a>. Among other things she mentioned the <a href="http://www.travelers-company.com/">Travelers Notebook </a>. I had never heard of it but it looked cool and seemed to be easy to customize and it was available in a passport size that was roughfly the same size as my old filofax.<br />

It is the middle of march but outside there is a cold winters storm raging. Or should I say a blizzard? For many years I have lived in the belief that march is the first spring month but now I am beginning to have doubts...<br />
